How to write a resume without work experience

A first resume can show evidence from coursework, personal projects, volunteering, and other responsibilities. Label each experience accurately and explain your contribution instead of presenting unpaid projects as employment.
Choose evidence that fits the application
Start with the role you want. A class presentation, a volunteer rota, a small website, or a research assignment can demonstrate useful skills. Choose a few relevant examples rather than listing every activity you have tried.
For each example, record the goal, your own actions, the tools you used, and what you produced. Keep a link or work sample where you can share it without exposing someone else’s private information.
Make your first sections useful
Use your name and contact details, then education, projects or relevant experience, and skills. Adjust the order to put your strongest relevant evidence first. A short profile is optional; it should identify your direction and evidence rather than describe you with broad adjectives.
List the qualification you are pursuing accurately, including an expected completion date if appropriate. Name relevant coursework selectively. Do not describe an unfinished course as an awarded certification.
Write a specific project bullet
Illustrative example: “Built a timetable page for a student club using HTML and CSS, and updated the page after member feedback.” This identifies a deliverable and your actions without inventing a commercial result.
If the work was shared, explain your part. “Prepared the survey questions and summarized responses for a four-person course project” is more informative than taking credit for the entire project. Use counts and results only when you have records.
Edit for honesty and readability
Use clear headings, consistent dates, and enough space to read comfortably. Remove empty experience sections, skill-rating bars without a clear meaning, and claims you could not discuss in an interview.
Ask someone to check spelling and whether each example is understandable without background knowledge. Follow the application’s format and length instructions. You do not need to invent a job to demonstrate that you can learn and complete useful work.
