DevOps Engineer resume example
A DevOps engineer is hired to make software ship safely and often, and to keep the systems it runs on healthy. That usually means owning CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, container platforms, observability, and the on-call rotation that catches what slips through. Hiring managers are looking for someone who can shorten the distance between a merged pull request and a working release without breaking things on the way.
A resume for this work has to be technical and specific. Name the cloud, the pipeline tool, the IaC tool, the container orchestrator, and the monitoring stack you actually used, then show what changed because you were there: deploy frequency, build time, incident count, mean time to recovery, cloud spend. Vague claims about automation read as filler; a line saying build time fell from 22 minutes to 7 reads as experience.
The example below covers about seven years, moving from sysadmin-adjacent work into platform ownership. It keeps tools in a skills block and saves the bullets for outcomes: pipelines rebuilt, Terraform modules standardised, alert noise cut, cost reduced. That is the shape a screener can scan in twenty seconds and an engineer can ask good questions about.
The example
Jordan Avery is a placeholder, and every employer on this page is fictional. The numbers are illustrative.
What makes it work
The same bullets as people usually write them, and what changed.
Before
Responsible for maintaining CI/CD pipelines for multiple teams.
After
Rebuilt the CI pipeline for eight service repos on shared runners, cutting average build time from 21 to 8 minutes.
Replaces a duty with a specific change and a before-and-after number a reviewer can picture.
Before
Used Terraform to manage cloud infrastructure.
After
Wrote reusable Terraform modules for VPCs, RDS and IAM roles so new environments could be provisioned in about an hour instead of two days.
Names what was built in Terraform and what it saved, rather than naming the tool alone.
Before
Improved monitoring and alerting across the platform.
After
Tuned Prometheus alert rules and removed 40 duplicate alerts, dropping pages per on-call week from 19 to 6.
Alert noise is a real pain point, and the numbers show judgment about what deserves a page.
Before
Worked with developers to help them deploy their applications.
After
Ran a monthly deploy clinic and wrote runbooks that let four product teams release to staging without platform help.
Turns vague collaboration into a repeatable practice with a clear handover result.
Before
Helped reduce AWS costs.
After
Moved batch workloads to spot instances and right-sized 30 EC2 nodes, trimming monthly cloud spend by about 18%.
Says how the saving happened, which makes the percentage credible.
Before
Participated in on-call rotation and handled production issues.
After
Carried on-call for a 12-service platform and led postmortems that closed 23 action items over a year, cutting repeat incidents by a third.
Shows follow-through after the outage, which is what separates senior on-call work from firefighting.
Keywords a devops engineer resume needs
| Keyword | Why it matters | Where to put it |
|---|---|---|
| CI/CD pipelines | The core of the job; screeners look for evidence you built and maintained delivery pipelines, not just used one. | summary and a bullet under your most recent role |
| Terraform | The most commonly required IaC tool, and often a hard filter in the job posting. | skills list and at least one bullet showing modules or state management |
| Kubernetes | Most platform roles run containers on Kubernetes; recruiters search the word directly. | skills list and a bullet about cluster or workload ownership |
| AWS | Cloud provider match matters more than general cloud experience; name the one you know. | summary and skills list |
| Docker | Shows you build and size images, not only deploy them. | skills list |
| Infrastructure as code | Signals that environments are reproducible rather than hand-built. | summary or a bullet about environment provisioning |
| Observability | Employers want someone who can tell why a system is slow, not just that it is down. | skills list and a bullet on dashboards, metrics or tracing |
| Prometheus and Grafana | The default open-source monitoring pair; naming both shows hands-on use. | skills list |
| Incident response | On-call ownership and postmortems separate platform engineers from build-script writers. | a bullet under your most recent role |
| Mean time to recovery | One of the few numbers hiring managers trust as a measure of platform health. | a result inside an incident or monitoring bullet |
| GitOps | Common in modern deployment setups and a quick signal of current practice. | skills list or a deployment bullet |
| Python and Bash | Automation work is still written in scripts; both show up in requirement lists. | skills list |
| Cloud cost optimization | Budget pressure makes savings a concrete, checkable result. | a bullet with a dollar or percentage figure |
| Secrets management | Security reviewers check whether credentials were handled properly. | skills list or a bullet about pipeline hardening |
Common mistakes
- Listing thirty tools in a skills block with no bullet showing how any of them were used in production.
- Describing pipeline work without a single timing, frequency or failure-rate number.
- Saying "automated manual processes" instead of naming the process and what it now takes to run.
- Hiding the cloud provider, so a recruiter filtering for AWS or Azure cannot tell which you know.
- Claiming Kubernetes experience that turns out to be one tutorial cluster, which falls apart in the first technical screen.
- Writing bullets about what the team shipped rather than what you built or owned.
- Leaving out on-call and incident work, which most hiring managers treat as a requirement.
- Filling the page with certification logos and course names instead of systems you kept running.
Questions people ask
- How long should a DevOps engineer resume be?
- One page works up to about six years; two pages are fine after that if the second page earns its space. Keep tools in one compact block and spend the room on what you built. A reviewer will skim the first eight bullets, so put your strongest pipeline or reliability work near the top.
- Should I list every tool I have touched?
- No. List what you could be questioned on for twenty minutes without hedging. A focused block of twelve to eighteen tools reads as stronger than forty, and interviewers do pick names off the list at random.
- What metrics matter most on this resume?
- Deploy frequency, build and pipeline duration, change failure rate, mean time to recovery, incident or page volume, and cloud spend. Pick three or four you genuinely influenced and attach them to specific bullets. Approximate figures are acceptable if you can explain how you got them.
- Do I need AWS or Kubernetes certifications?
- They help most when you are moving from sysadmin, support or development into DevOps and need a signal of current knowledge. A Certified Kubernetes Administrator or an AWS associate-level cert is worth listing. Neither substitutes for a bullet showing you ran real clusters or accounts.
- How do I show DevOps experience if my title was sysadmin or developer?
- Use the headline to say DevOps Engineer or Platform Engineer and let the role titles stay accurate. Then write bullets around the DevOps parts of the job: pipelines, provisioning, monitoring, releases, on-call. Most hiring managers care about what you operated, not what HR called you.
- Should I include a homelab or personal projects?
- Only if your paid work is thin on a tool the job requires. One short line naming the setup and what it runs is enough, such as a three-node cluster with GitOps deployments. Drop it once you have production experience with the same thing.
- How do I write about on-call without sounding like I only fought fires?
- Pair the rotation with what you changed afterwards: alert tuning, runbooks, postmortem actions closed, repeat incidents reduced. That tells a manager you reduce future pages instead of absorbing them. Mention the size of what you covered, like the number of services or clusters.
- Do ATS systems really scan for these keywords?
- Screening filters and recruiters both search for exact tool names, so write Terraform, Kubernetes and GitHub Actions rather than "IaC and container tooling". Keep the terms in plain text, not in an image or a sidebar graphic. Just make sure each keyword is backed by something in the experience section.
