Arabic or English CV for a Saudi or Gulf application?

Reviewed

Follow the employer’s stated language requirement first. When none is given, use the job advertisement and application form as clues, and ask the recruiter if the choice remains unclear. There is no single language rule for every Saudi or Gulf employer.

Read the application instructions first

Check whether the employer requests a particular language or separate versions. An English advertisement can be a useful clue, but it is not proof that an Arabic CV is unwelcome. The responsibilities and expected working language matter too.

If you have a recruiter contact, ask a short, specific question about the preferred CV language. Do not delay a clear application requirement while trying to follow general advice from an unrelated employer.

Maintain two consistent versions

Translate the meaning of your experience rather than word-for-word phrases. Keep employment dates, qualifications, results, and seniority consistent between versions. Retain the official spelling of employers, products, and credentials where translating them would create confusion.

Illustrative wording pair: “Prepared monthly sales reports” and “أعددت تقارير المبيعات الشهرية”. A translation should not upgrade preparation to management or add a sales-growth figure that was absent from the source.

Check Arabic layout after export

Use right-to-left paragraph direction for Arabic text and check lines containing Latin product names, email addresses, or numbers. Open the exported document on another device if available. Inspect how the text copies into a plain-text editor.

Prefer separate, complete documents when two languages are requested. Placing sentence-by-sentence translations side by side can make the document longer and harder to scan. Follow the employer’s template when one is supplied.

Make language skills precise

Describe the languages you can use and the level you can reasonably demonstrate. A translated CV is not itself evidence of fluency. If translation assistance was used, make sure you understand every statement and can discuss it.

Avoid claiming that all employers in a country prefer the same format, language, photo policy, or personal details. Requirements vary by application. This guide is a decision checklist, not a claim about a universal regional hiring rule.
